GAMELAN WIZARD

Resembling an ancient proto-pinball machine crafted eons ago and found centuries later in a Javanese burial chamber, Gamelan Wizard is an eight-player pinball game housed in an intricately carved octagonal pendopo incorporating Gamelan instrumentation. Developed during an Asialink residency, Abela worked with Wukir Suryadi and Rully Shabara, alongside Gamelan master builder Wibowo and his skilled craftspeople, who hand-carved the cabinet and forged the Gamelan. The machine pits together our two disparate icons, Pinnies and Gamelan, creating a unique participatory installation that meshes our respective cultural identities.
